📸 The Do’s and Don’ts for Parents During a Newborn Session
By Svetlana Boyko Photography | Newborn Photographer in Mercer County, NJ
Welcoming a new baby is a whirlwind of joy, emotions, and sleepless nights. When it comes time for your newborn session, it’s completely normal to feel a little overwhelmed — especially if it’s your first!
That’s why I’ve put together this simple guide of do’s and don’ts to help you feel relaxed, prepared, and ready to enjoy every moment of your baby’s first photo shoot.
✅ The DO’s:
1. DO Bring a Pacifier (Even if Baby Doesn’t Usually Use One)
Sometimes all it takes is a few seconds of soothing to get that perfect, sleepy pose. Even if your baby doesn’t regularly take a pacifier, it can be a lifesaver during the session.
2. DO Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove
Skip anything that goes over the head. A simple zip-up onesie or snap-down outfit makes transitions smooth without disturbing baby’s sleep.
3. DO Bring Extra Milk or Formula
A full tummy = a happy, sleepy baby. Feeding breaks are totally normal and welcomed — we go at baby’s pace!
4. DO Relax and Trust the Process
I’ve been photographing newborns for over 10 years and have handled hundreds of babies with care and safety. My studio is warm, calm, and fully stocked — just sit back, sip some coffee, and enjoy the experience.
5. DO Communicate Any Concerns
Have a special item you’d like included? Worried about siblings? Just let me know in advance and we’ll work it into your session plan.
🚫 The DON’Ts:
1. DON’T Stress if Baby is Fussy
Trust me — it’s totally normal. I plan extra time into every session for soothing, feeding, and diaper changes. We’re never rushed.
2. DON’T Overpack
I’ve got you covered with wraps, props, outfits, headbands, and backdrops. Just bring the essentials: baby, food, diapers, pacifier, and anything sentimental you’d like photographed.
3. DON’T Worry About the House (if in-home)
If we’re doing a lifestyle session in your home, don’t worry about cleaning everything. I’ll focus on the natural, cozy corners that tell your family’s story.
4. DON’T Forget to Take Care of Yourself
You just had a baby — let me take care of everything else. Moms are always welcome to rest during the session or get in the frame for a few meaningful shots.
5. DON’T Compare Your Session to Others
Every baby is different. Some sleep the whole time, others need more breaks — and that’s perfectly okay. Your baby’s session will be beautiful, just the way it is.
💛 Final Thoughts
My goal is to make your newborn session stress-free, safe, and full of love. With a little prep and a lot of patience, we’ll create timeless images you’ll treasure forever.
