Sometimes a really great place to find inspiration for a cake smash idea is to use the seasons as your guide. While springtime babies can go with themes that are fresh and light, winter babies can pull off setups that are rustic and cozy. That is exactly what this mommy had in mind for her little guy’s first birthday cake smash. We used winter elements such as wood, buffalo plaid, and even small pine trees, but without making it holiday specific. It was the perfect rustic winter cake smash set!
The first setup in this cake smash session was reminiscent of a cozy cabin. I used my wooden backdrops to create the set, then brought out some rustic props. We strung up small lanterns, scattered some pine cones, and even some cute little black bears that mommy brought from home. She also brought in some big letters that spell ONE. Rustic patterns decorated the letters, which perfectly matched the entire setup. The birthday boy himself wore red and black buffalo plaid pajamas, which looked very cute and cozy indeed!
For the cake set, I started with my Savage seamless backdrop in the color Pecan. This warm neutral color worked great to tie in all the rustic winter props together. We hung a fabric tassel banner in red and black buffalo plaid, then decorated with wooden slabs, lanterns, small pine trees, and the pine cones. For his smash outfit, this little guy wore little jeans with red suspenders. I think baby boys look so cute in suspenders!
For his smash, his mommy brought in a small chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. It was very cleverly made up to resemble a piece of wooden log! Very creative and perfect for a rustic winter cake smash set.
